Jasper's Disappearance, by Kate
Jasper is our really good pet. He has some really cute times, but also some times when we are really worried about him. One day this week we thought Jasper was dead or had run away. Let me tell you about it. A normal school day started. Then someone (who I will not mention) took Jasper upstairs as they were getting ready to brush their teeth. Then they forgot about him. We left for school! Mom happened to go home in the middle of the day because she had to pick up something for Elizabeth and on the drive home she was thinking (she told me later) how she could give Jasper a special middle-of-the-day snack. When she arrived home she saw an empty cage! She wondered if Jasper had run away but then how could that be because his cage was closed. Mom looked everywhere, even down the street. So when she got back to school mom told dad and he went home to look. He had to ask the middle school principal permission to go home in the middle of the day. Still Jasper had not come back. Finally school ended. Then mom told us the sad news. Jasper was gone! They had found no clues where he had gone - no fur or poops. Then someone else who I will not mention started to cry. So then the person who had last had Jasper out of his cage in the morning realized what had happened, remembered where they had put Jasper, and we all rushed home. We went and looked and there was Jasper, safe in a laundry basket! The person who had put him there thought he would like cuddling with clothes. Luckily Jasper was still alive although he was very hungry and thirsty. Maybe Jasper now hates laundry baskets.

MSSPP, by Kate
On Valentines Day, Hannah, Aimee, and I got to run a race. It was four kilometers. I was in the Under 12 category. I got twentieth place. The race was at another school that was about an hour away from my school. The Under 12 boys went first. Then the girls went second. There was a lot of pushing and shoving to get close to the start line. Finally, 'bam', the gun fired and we started but my shoe came off. I had to go back and get it. Finally I was able to start the race. Then at the halfway point we had to get a coloured band to wear on our wrist (it was like a fuzzy hair elastic) to say we completed that part of the race. [Note from Mom: I guess one year a racer cheated by having their parent pick them up on a motorbike and drive them close to the finish line so now they have these checkpoints.] The guy would not give it to me as I ran past so I had to go back and get it. Then I finished the race and got the medal and certificate. There were almost 1,700 runners of all different ages from schools all over the state of Penang.
