On December 23rd we took the train from Butterworth to Bangkok. Butterworth is a city across the Straits of Malacca from Penang Island. We had to take a ferry over from the island to Butterworth. It is a free ferry. The train was scheduled to leave Butterworth at 2:20 p.m. but was delayed and did not leave until 4:00 p.m. The train trip from Butterworth to Bangkok takes about 22 hours. We brought card games, a few toys, and books to pass the time. We also brought our own food as it is pricey to purchase it on the train.

We purchased 6 second class sleeper compartments. At night they turn the bottom seat into a bed and pull down an upper bunk so two people sleep in a kind of bunk bed.

While on the train we saw one elephant and some monkeys, and the scenery ranged from rice fields to lots of coconut trees to makeshift housing for very poor people. Everything went well with only one unfortunate incident: Kate had a bad nose bleed in the middle of the night (she gets them more here).
